What does “Dental pulp” mean?
Pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Although it is often called the 'dental nerve', it is not made up of nerves alone.
Where is the pulp?
It runs from the pulp chamber inside the tooth crown to the root canal inside the root. It is involved in the development of growing teeth and also plays a role in responding to external stimuli. It is the tissue inside the tooth that is distinct from the gums or tissue around the root outside the tooth.
Situations where pulp is irritated
Deep decay, cracks, or trauma can affect the pulp. During assessment, brief sensitivity to cold is distinguished from spontaneous throbbing or pain that lingers. Little or no pain does not necessarily mean the internal tissue is healthy.
How do I decide on treatment?
Symptoms, pulp response tests, and radiographs are assessed together. Depending on the condition, a restoration that protects the pulp or pulp-preserving treatment may be considered. Inflammation or infection that is unlikely to recover may require root canal treatment. The statement “it is close to the pulp” alone does not determine treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does pulp refer only to the tooth nerve?
Pulp includes nerves as well as blood vessels and connective tissue. When understanding the expression root canal treatment, it is good to know that it deals with the entire internal tissue of the tooth.
If it doesn't hurt, is the pulp healthy?
Pulp status cannot be confirmed simply because there is no pain. The depth of the cavity, past trauma, test reactions, and images are also checked.
If the pulp is damaged, do I need to extract the tooth?
Depending on pulp condition and whether the tooth can be restored, pulp-preserving treatment or root canal treatment may be considered. A pulp problem alone does not determine whether extraction is needed.
