Understanding the unique properties of each layer is the beginning of a healthy design.As the outermost layer encompassing the tooth, it is the hardest tissue in the human body, composed of 96% minerals, and contains no nerves. In aesthetic treatments, preserving this enamel layer as much as possible is considered a critical principle.Dentin is a hard tissue that makes up the bulk of the tooth, surrounding the inner pulp. Due to the presence of microscopic tubular structures within the dentin, external stimuli can easily be transmitted to the pulp. Therefore, whether dentin is preserved during treatment significantly impacts both the comfort and the long-term stability of the tooth.Located deep within the tooth, this soft tissue contains nerves and blood vessels that supply moisture and essential nutrients. As it is the primary tissue responsible for perceiving pain, damage can lead to discomfort or inflammatory responses. Therefore, protecting the pulp is a top priority in every treatment plan.The extent of tooth reduction can reach 0.5–1mm, which may penetrate beyond the enamel and into the dentin. This can result in tooth sensitivity or a visible change where the teeth appear smaller.Although they use a thinner profile than conventional methods, a reduction of at least 0.2mm is often needed.
