What does “Digital smile design” mean?
Digital smile design uses photographs, videos, and intraoral scans to analyze the relationship between the teeth and face and plan the post-treatment shape. It is a tool for explaining and discussing the treatment direction.
Original spelling: 디지털 스마일 디자인(DSD)
What information do we see together?
We look at the length and width of the front teeth, the space between the teeth, the center line of the face and the center line of the teeth, and the relationship between the teeth, gums, and lips that are visible when smiling. Since it is difficult to get a good idea of what it looks like when it moves with only one frontal photo, a variety of materials are used together.
A digital plan allows you to discuss the changes you want to make and the scope of what is possible with actual treatment. However, the program or output method used varies depending on the treatment environment.
Simulations and real results
What looks pretty on the screen is not a treatment plan that is immediately available. The feasibility of implementation must be evaluated in connection with the preparation space, adhesion conditions, occlusion, and gum condition.
The process of checking the shape and pronunciation in the mouth using a mock-up can be added. The appearance of the screen or mock-up is only a planning aid and does not completely reflect the color and optical properties of the final material.
How to use it during consultation
Describe the tooth length you want, changes you would find too dramatic, and the aspects of your smile that concern you. Along with the proposed image, ask which teeth need which procedures to achieve the design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the final teeth look exactly like the screen image?
Digital images help with planning and communication. There are differences depending on the actual condition of the teeth, color/translucency of the material, and oral conditions, so a confirmation process in the mouth is necessary.
When designing, do you only look at the shape of the teeth?
Lip movement, tooth exposure, proportions relative to adjacent teeth, speech, and bite are also considered. Clinical assessment provides information that a single frontal photograph cannot show.
When should I say something if I don't like the design?
Before preparing your teeth, we discuss your goals in detail and confirm your opinions during the preview and try-in stages. Since the range of changes available at each stage is different, it is recommended to receive an explanation of when changes can be made.
3 things to check before consulting on digital smile design
Please review the questions to ask before deciding on treatment and the treatment standards of TU Dental Clinic.
- Sufficient understanding
Does the clinic explain the difference between screen simulations and actual results?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic explains the different roles of the screen design, temporary preview, and final try-in. It also explains that temporary materials do not exactly reproduce the translucency and texture of the final ceramic.
What to check in simulation, smile preview, and try-in - A choice suited to your condition
Does the clinic check smile, pronunciation, and bite together?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic uses an intraoral preview to assess length, proportions, volume, and harmony with the face and lips. Color and bite are checked again at the final try-in.
What to check in simulation, smile preview, and try-in - Preservation of natural teeth
Does the clinic let me know in advance the extent of tooth preparation required for the design?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic examines the remaining tooth tissue and determines the scope of treatment by distinguishing between functionally necessary treatment and aesthetic adjustments.
