What does “Cementoenamel junction (CEJ)” mean?
The cementoenamel junction (CEJ) is where the enamel of the crown meets the cementum of the root. It is the anatomical reference separating the tooth crown from its root.
Does it match the gum line you see now?
The cementoenamel junction is the boundary of the tooth tissue, and the gum line is the current location of the soft tissue. If your gums swell or recede, the relationship between the two lines may change. This is why we check the shape of the teeth and the position of the gums when explaining the feeling that the teeth look longer.
Why is it used as a standard for gum examination?
Periodontal examination requires a certain reference point when assessing the location and degree of loss of tissue around teeth. The cementoenamel junction is one of the criteria for describing the level of gum recession or attachment. The severity of the disease cannot be determined simply by seeing the border.
Sensitivity near the junction
When the gums recede, the root surface is exposed, or the cervical tissue wears away, sensitivity may occur. Other causes such as cavities and cracks are also distinguished. If you see a small dent or stain on the neck of the tooth, check the location and depth and decide on a management method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the cementoenamel junction at the same location as the gum line?
The cementoenamel junction is the anatomical boundary of the tooth where enamel and cementum meet. The position of the gum line may vary depending on inflammation or recession, so it is not always aligned.
If the neck of a tooth is sensitive, is the junction itself the cause?
There may be exposed roots, wear, or cavities near the border, but the cause cannot be determined based on location alone. Examine symptoms and surface conditions together.
Does a visible junction need to be covered immediately?
Do not decide on restoration based on appearance alone. We check gum recession, lesions, sensitivity, and management status to determine whether observation or treatment is necessary.

Please review the questions to ask before deciding on treatment and the treatment standards of TU Dental Clinic.
- Sufficient understanding
Does the clinic explain the difference between anatomical boundaries and the current gum line?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic explains why treatment options differ according to the extent of tooth decay. Ask during consultation if you are unsure about a location recorded in your dental notes.
Integrated treatment that examines cavities and gums together - A choice suited to your condition
Does the clinic check the cause of cavities, wear and sensitivity of exposed areas?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic explains the treatment needed based on the current state of tooth decay and the gums. The treatment extent is determined from the diagnosis.
Integrated treatment that examines cavities and gums together - Preservation of natural teeth
Can you tell if a covered restoration is needed or if it can be monitored with care?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic monitors the progress of tooth decay and determines the treatment range by considering the tooth tissue that can be preserved.
