What does “Tooth eruption” mean?
Eruption is the process by which teeth that were developing within the jawbone and gums emerge into the mouth and move into a functional position. Both primary and permanent teeth go through an eruption process.
Is it a problem if the time is different from what is shown in the table?
Eruption charts show the usual order and timing of tooth emergence as a reference for development. Individual variation means that a date or age alone does not determine whether eruption is normal. A marked difference from the matching tooth on the other side, or a baby tooth remaining for a long time, may warrant assessment of the cause.
What to look for when a tooth does not erupt
We check whether permanent teeth are present, whether there is enough space to erupt, whether they are in a different direction, or whether they are blocked by other teeth or structures. Teeth that erupt late, teeth that erupt in the wrong direction, and impacted teeth must be differentiated from each other. Impaction refers to a condition in which a tooth fails to erupt normally and remains in the tissue.
Care of teeth as they emerge
A toothbrush may have difficulty reaching a molar that is partly covered by gum or lower than adjacent teeth. Identify where it is emerging and clean gently. Persistent pain, swelling, or other discomfort should be assessed by a dentist. Severe symptoms should not simply be dismissed as teething.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do teeth erupt at the same time for everyone?
Although there is a general order and extent of eruption, there are individual differences. In addition to age, the condition of other teeth and eruption progress are checked.
What happens if the opposite tooth erupts but only one side doesn’t?
Asymmetric eruption may warrant checking available space and tooth position. A delay on one side alone does not establish the cause.
If a little bit is visible outside the gums, is the eruption complete?
A distinction can be made between when a tooth becomes visible through the gums and when it settles into a functional position. While coming up, it is recommended to maintain cleanliness and check the condition of surrounding gums.
