What does “Resin infiltration (Icon)” mean?
Resin infiltration is a method of infiltrating low-viscosity resin into the microscopic porous area beneath the tooth surface. ICON is the product name used for this method.
It is different from the resin added on teeth.
While conventional resin restorations fill lost tissue or build up a shape, infiltration introduces material into microscopic pores. It is used for some early non-cavitated lesions and to improve the appearance of white spots. Its purpose and application also differ from whitening that brightens teeth overall.
Scattering of light is related to the white appearance of decalcified areas. As the resin enters the tiny spaces, visible differences from surrounding teeth may be reduced, but not all spots will have the same results.
Are all white spots possible?
We evaluate the cause, depth, and surface condition of the spot and whether a hole actually appears. Different causes, such as developmental changes, fluorosis, and demineralization, may appear in similar colors, so diagnosis is a priority.
Infiltration alone may not restore deep lesions or cavities where tooth structure has already broken down. Its applications should be distinguished from remineralization care, microabrasion, and resin restoration.
Prevention is necessary even after treatment
The procedure requires surface preparation and moisture control and is performed in a dental office. Even if the spots become less visible, you should continue to manage demineralization risk factors such as eating habits and oral hygiene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ICON remove all white spots?
Depending on the cause and depth of the white spots, application and degree of color improvement vary. There are also discolorations or structural defects that are difficult to resolve with resin infiltration methods.
What is the difference between resin infiltration and regular resin filling?
The infiltration method is a method of infiltrating low-viscosity resin into some lesions before a clear hole is formed on the surface. The purpose and scope of application are different from regular resin fillings that fill and shape the defect.
Does avoiding a drill mean no treatment is involved?
Resin infiltration still involves surface pretreatment and application of material. Check the type of lesion it targets and the limits of treatment, rather than choosing it solely because little tooth reduction is involved.
3 things to check before choosing a resin infiltration method (ICON)
Please review the questions to ask before deciding on treatment and the treatment standards of TU Dental Clinic.
- A choice suited to your condition
Are the cause of the spot and the depth of the lesion within the scope of application of the infiltration method?
TU Dental Clinic’s treatment standardsTU Dental Clinic determines the scope of treatment by checking the tooth structure and bite, gum condition, and existing treatment history.
