What does “Mesial” mean?
The mesial direction is towards the middle line of the dentition. The side of one tooth that is closer to the center of the upper and lower front teeth is called the mesial side.
Expression of direction different from left or right
Mesial does not refer to a fixed left or right side of a patient or photograph. It is defined relative to the dental midline, so its direction on an image differs for teeth on the right and left. The opposite direction is distal.
It is written like this in the treatment description:
The phrase ‘there is a cavity on the mesial surface of the molar’ describes the location of the side of the molar that is close to the center of the teeth. It is easy to understand the scope of restoration by listening to which side of the tooth. Direction itself does not indicate the depth or severity of the cavity.
Explanation related to between teeth
At a contact between neighboring teeth, the distal surface of one tooth faces the mesial surface of the next. These terms help describe food trapping and tooth contacts. If you hear “mesial,” you can ask the dentist to point out the location on a photograph or model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does mesial mean the left side of the tooth?
It refers to the direction closer to the center line of the teeth, not to the left or right. The actual direction varies depending on which tooth it is.
Does a mesial cavity mean the decay is deep?
Mesial identifies the surface where the lesion is located. The depth and progression of decay must be assessed separately.
Does M in a dental record mean mesial?
When recording tooth surfaces, M stands for mesial. It may be combined with other surface symbols such as O or D.
